Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic shoes, sometimes referred to as extra depth, therapeutic shoes, are specially designed shoes, or shoe inserts, intended to reduce the risk of skin breakdown in diabetics with co-existing foot disease.

People with diabetic neuropathy in their feet may have a false sense of security as to how much at risk their feet actually are. An ulcer under the foot can develop in a couple of hours.

The primary goal of therapeutic footwear is to prevent complications, which can include strain, ulcers, calluses, or even amputations for patients with diabetes and poor circulation. Neuropathy can also change the shape of a person's feet, which limits the range of shoes that can be worn comfortably. In addition to meeting strict guidelines, diabetic shoes must be prescribed by a physician and fit by a qualified individual, such as an orthotist, podiatrist or pedorthist. The shoes must also be equipped with a removable orthotic.

Foot orthotics are devices such as shoe inserts, arch supports, or shoe fillers such as lifts, wedges and heels. The diabetic shoes and custom-molded inserts work together as a preventative system to help diabetics avoid foot injuries and improve mobility.

In the United States, diabetic shoes can be covered by Medicare.

Your doctor may prescribe a neck Brace or back brace "Spinal - Cervical Braces" for you to wear after a spinal injury or surgery.

A Spinal - Cervical Braces does three things:

immobilizes your spine during healing
stabilizes injured areas

controls pain by restricting movement

Neck Braces, Back Braces "Spinal - Cervical Braces", also called orthotics, are made from a variety of materials such as elastic cotton/nylon, foam rubber, and molded plastic. An orthotist is a medical professional that specializes in making custom molded braces, adjusting their fit, and providing tips for comfort and proper wear.

Braces can be worn on any section of the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral) and are named for the area of the spine to which they are applied. Common spine orthoses include:

Cervical (e.g., Miami J, Philadelphia collar)
Cervical-thoracic (e.g., Minerva, SOMI)
Halo ring (e.g., Breman, PMT)
Thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis (TLSO)
Lumbar-sacral orthosis (LSO)

It's important to follow your doctor's specific instructions for when and how to wear your brace—especially when sleeping, showering, and during certain activities.

It is important to understand Leg Braces do not actually "hold" a person up, but rather serve to keep certain weak joints straight so that the wearer´s own bone structure supports his or her weight. They also help to keep legs and feet in "correct" positions, preventing the development of, or return of, muscle contractures or other deformities.

Stance Control Leg Braces allow the wearer to walk more naturally. In the short-term, that means more energy to spend moving forward and less wear and tear on the body. People who use stance control braces often comment that they—and those around them – are much less aware of the device, and simply think about what they are doing.
